Vick foundation
The Vick Foundation was established by Edward Vick in February 2004.
The purpose of the Foundation is to assist, develop and promote Bulgarian fiction inside and outside Bulgaria. The objective is to attract interest for works of contemporary Bulgarian writers.
The focus is the Vick Prize, an annual competition for the best Bulgarian novel of the year. The prize is a monetary award of BGN 10,000 (approximately €5,000) and the option of a translation of the work into English.
It is awarded to the author of the best novel as determined by the jury, annually selected by the committee. The responsibility of the jury is to select six shortlisted novels from all the qualifying novels and vote for the best Bulgarian novel of the year, which is then awarded the Vick Prize.
In addition, there is a competition for the most popular book. Out of the six shortlisted novels, the general public casts votes for their favourite. The author of the novel with the greatest public acclaim receives a prize of BGN 1,000 (approximately €500).
Voting for the novel is carried out on the Foundation website at
vickfoundation.com and also via postcards.
In 2008, the Vick Foundation introduced celebrities as Ambassadors for the Vick Prize. With this new move, the foundation aims to create further impetus for Bulgarian literature to reach a wider audience. The 5 ambassadors are businessman Hristo Kovachki, Bulgarian Socialist Party MP Maya Manolova, footballer from Levski FC Nikolai Dimitrov, singer Galya from the duo KariZma and Miss Bulgaria 2001 Tanya Karabelova.
